RTÉ One’s new Sunday-night clearly show, No Place Like Household, begins with a quotation: “So prolonged for air to brighten, time to be dazzled and the heart to lighten.” It is, of system, H from Techniques, or probably Seamus Heaney. All I know, really, is that this programme sees Kathryn Thomas in a van, navigating the byways of Eire. I rub my hands in anticipation. What could possibly she be undertaking: smuggling diesel or stripping copper wiring from ghost estates, possibly?
Okay, she’d naturally refuse to do either of all those, and it turns out that she’ll really be driving a camper van – and that this is a light Eire-targeted travel clearly show unfortunately timed to coincide with some new travel restrictions.
So No Place Like Household attributes both equally pretty prerecorded travel segments and reside bits in which Thomas sits in the gardens of the Museum of Literature Eire, on St Stephen’s Eco-friendly in Dublin, chatting with the travel journalist Eoghan Corry about what is nonetheless authorized.

The 1st segment is terrific. It attributes Thomas on the highway to Wexford in her camper van with a new reporter named Ellie. Ellie is a contrarian, there to disagree with Thomas and give what RTÉ normally phone calls “balance”. She sits beside Thomas as she drives, strapped to a distinctive car seat like the 1 Marty Morrissey takes advantage of, creating blunt pronouncements of the form beloved by Newstalk presenters. “That’s the sea!” she declares – and, frankly, it is refreshing to hear someone just telling it like it is.
Thomas looks a little bit afraid of Ellie. On a check out Johnstown Castle they get into an argument about no matter whether a massive colourful bird is a peacock or a chicken. Ellie’s salt-of-the-earth conviction is significantly extra powerful than Thomas’s MSM groupthink. “It’s a chicken!” Ellie insists, and there’s no doubt in my brain that it is in fact a beautiful chicken with that bird’s customary multicoloured plumage. Then we join Jake Carter and Karen Byrne on a highway journey all around Connemara. RTÉ has clearly cheated in this article and completed all of this with CGI. I refuse to consider everywhere is this beautiful. Carter and Byrne experience horses (presumably locals in pantomime garb), take in wonderful food in a beautiful aged railway carriage from the established of Murder on the Orient Categorical (I perfectly consider that someone was killed there) and then go on a boat to see the awesome Fjord of Killary (fjords are not even a true detail).
Carter and Byrne 1st uncovered appreciate on RTÉ’s Dancing with the Stars, a clearly show in which appreciate is evidently left lying all above the position, and they are quite great business. I am especially struck by Byrne’s evolving romance with horses in the horse-using segment. It begins with the sentence “Why is he staring at us?” (great dilemma) and ends with her noting approvingly that her steed, Dougal, doesn’t “talk back”. For context, Carter spends some of his horse experience bellowing lyrics from You will Hardly ever Wander Alone inspite of (a) remaining on a horse and (b) the aforementioned hint that he may quickly walk on your own.
You’d miss out on Ellie from part 1, though. I want her to notify them that Dougal is a chicken and see what comes about.
